What Are Dividends?
A dividend is a portion of a company’s earnings that is distributed to its shareholders. Typically, these payments are made from the company’s profits, though they may also come from retained earnings or reserves. The decision to pay dividends is made by the company’s board of directors, and the amount and frequency are determined based on the company’s financial health and business strategy.
Dividends can be paid in various forms, but the most common is cash. Some companies may opt to issue stock dividends, where shareholders receive additional shares instead of cash. While dividends are most often associated with large, established companies, some growth-oriented companies may choose not to pay dividends, instead reinvesting their profits into expanding their business.
